At the SAP Influencer Summit in Boston, SAP executives are talking about their plans for SAP HANA.  Although the news was already out, SAP officially announced today that SAP HANA is at the core of its platform roadmap.  SAP also shared some details on what is in store for HANA as a database and showcased some third-party solutions built on SAP HANA.

At the Influencer Summit, Vishal Sikka, SAP CTO, said that SAP plans to have an open ecosystem for HANA.  As evidence of this open ecosystem, SAP featured five current initiatives by independent software vendors to build solutions powered by SAP HANA. TIBCO is developing real-time collaboration and analytics solutions on the SAP HANA platform, Tableau Software is designing a solution powered by SAP HANA that will visualize business information in real-time, Simba makes and Jive Software is testing analytics for is social collaboration software on SAP HANA as a database.  Simba already offers a solution powered by SAP HANA that integrates Salesforce.com with SAP BusinessObjects OnDemand.  UFIDA is also planning to develop real-time analytic applications using SAP HANA.

It also came out at the Influencer Summit that SAP plans to use HANA to become a leader in the database market. Chris Kanaracus reports:

“Mark my words. By 2015, we’re going to be the number-two database company in the market,” said Steve Lucas, global general manager and senior executive, business analytics and technology. “I know who we have to pass. They’re not inconsequential companies. It’s going to take us years and a lot of engineering to get there, but we will.”

Work on transferring SAP core Business Suite applications to HANA has begun, but there is no indication of when this work might be completed.  Widespread adoption of SAP HANA is likely to come sooner as independent software vendors form partnerships with SAP to embed HANA in their products.

Kanaracus reports that SAP has not yet made a decision on whether it will sell HANA as a standalone database.
